Photos of Pecan Grafts. The picture on the right is a photo of an older pecan tree top worked. The six grafts in the top are different varieties. The tree will be pruned to force the grafts to be the dominate limbs of the tree. Any limbs below the grafts are trimmed off so the grafts get full sunlight. Over a period of 4-5 years all of the limbs below the grafts will be pruned off leaving only the grafted limbs. The photo in the center is a 2 year old graft of a Mohawk Graft. The graft is splinted with a steel rod for the first 2 years to prevent breaking. The photo on the right is a Hican grafted to a pecan seedling. Notice the graft union.
Photo of Grafts. The graft on the left is a pear grafted onto an apple tree. The graft took and lived for about 5 years. The incompatibility produced a large gall at the graft union. The graft did produce 2 pears that were about the size of golf balls. The second from the left is a graft of a 2 year old pecan graft that had tto much tape and the tape constricted the growth near the union. The next photo is of the same graft the following year. The photo on the right is an older graft of a Major Pecan on a seedling. Even after several years you can still see the graft union. ( Note the fencers are on the trunk of the tree to prevent squirrels from climbing it.)
